Welcome to Getting Better!

This is a long time coming.

Half due to the fact that for the past few years staring at a computer screen for 5 minutes would give me an instant migraine and eye pain like no other, and the other half due to my perfectionism-procrastination.

Time has partly healed the first part, and for the other I am practicing being scrappy, shooting for progress over perfection, and leaning into the vulnerability that is creating something from your heart and putting it out into the open.

So you're getting the fresh and uncut version of this project. Thank you for being here :) look around, listen to an episode, let me know if I've spelled something wrong or said something egregious...and subscribe if you're into that thing.

Getting Better is a collection of practices, tips, advice, and support to help you feel good, feel great, or if you're starting from a place of hurt, feel better than you were before.

My eye history is a long one, and a doozy at that, so for now just know that I've had about 13 surgeries (and counting) on one eye, and for the past 4 years I have not been able to strain my eyes, which means I haven't read a book in that time. And if you're asking yourself, "how is she writing this, building a website, and editing her podcasts without reading or looking at screens?" (which I know you said to that entirety) the answer is that my eyes have slightly healed and grown in their tolerance of screens since the last surgery. And though I deal with chronic pain daily (hence the chronic part), I take my responsibilities like I take most things in life, drenched in anxiety and bit by bit.

Instead of reading, I have been listening to my heart's content. I have consumed so many audio books and podcasts, the latter inspiring me to use the platform to share information that has helped me get out of the figuratively and literally darkest parts of my life. Due to my photosensitivity, I have spent a depressingly large amount of time in the dark. But just like so many people were to me, I hope to be a light in your darkness, or at least introduce you to some lights in my life.

So, enough about me. This is about you getting better, whether:

  • you feel healthy and happy, and just want to stay in the loop

  • you feel like you want to make some healthy changes in your life, but don't know where to start

  • you want to heal from hurt or heartache, and could use some comfort and guidance

or...

  • you are in a dark space with physical or mental hurt, looking for some hope and help

...this is a place where you can receive empathy, encouragement, some education, and (in the near future) enlightenment from others who have gone or are going through similar situations. If you're wanting to know more of what you can expect, listen to EP0 - getting better trailer.

Getting Better podcast is the bulk of this project. Its purpose is to help others and it also stands to commemorate the hurt and healing I have been going through the last couple of years. There is power in storytelling and here you will find mine. This website is here for you to find resources mentioned, read scripts of the podcasts or watch their videos, and connect through the gb community. (I've also hidden a secret space for fun goodies because websites are boring.)

This is all in the beginning stages, so if it sucks (or rocks) in your opinion, let a girl know why. I am letting it all fly as I have another surgery in less than 2 months, and that impending uncertainty is lighting a fire under my butt. Feels like now or never and never seems less fun.

That's the honest spiel! I hope you enjoy this project and podcast. You're human, I'm human, so reach out, connect, ask questions, and enjoy! Thank you for being here.

Years of studying psychology and medicine have taught me how to find scientifically-backed research.

My background in neuropsychology and public health have shown me how important it is to spread awareness for others' hope and health's sake.

And my personal challenges (woof) have brought me to my knees, to wacky health trends, and to the best community I've ever had.

Here are some of my thoughts and helpful resources.
